TEAK WOOD

Weather changes affect the wood, but the degree of its impact varies among different timbers. Statistics revealed from the studies done on different wood types emphasize the value of Teak. Whether it is the case of shrinkage on drying from green to 12% moisture content, or movement on transferring timber from 90% relative humidity to 60%; Teak stands among the best wood.

Despite the natural features of Teak, time does cause some weathering. Some treatment is certainly needed to provide long lasting protection to the wood. Paint acts as protective medium on wood for a long time, but it hides the wood. If the natural looks of the wood is to be shown, a clear coating should be applied. This coating can be done using oil, sealer or varnish or Polyurthane  but start the work by cleaning it well.

CLEANING

Your teak is sensitive to strong cleaners, so always choose the mildest cleaner. You may take a 75/25 mixture of liquid detergent and chlorine bleach, perhaps boosted with TSP (trisodium phosphate). Now, apply this mixture with a stiff brush, scrubbing lightly with the grain. Leave it on the wood for several minutes to give the detergent time to suspend the dirt and the bleach time to lighten the wood, then rinse the wood thoroughly, brushing it to clear the grain.

OIL

Apply teak oil on the clean wood with a paint brush. Wipe up (with a spirits-dampened cloth) any drips immediately, or the resins the oil contains will leave dark, nearly-impossible-to-remove stains. Watch out for sneaky runs below the rail.

Apply multiple coats of oil. Initially, the wood will "drink" the oil, and thinning the first coat about 20% with mineral spirits or turpentine encourages it to penetrate the wood more deeply. As you apply the third coat, some excess oil might show up. Wipe up this excess oil with a cloth. Continue till you get a matt finish on the wood without any shiny spots.

SEALER

As the name implies, sealers seal out moisture and dirt, and seal in natural oils and resins. Before starting with the sealing process, if you have not done the oiling work recently do that first.

After two weeks, wash the wood and let it dry completely. Sealers need an oil-free surface to attach to, so wipe the wood heavily with a rag soaked in acetone to remove all oil from the surface. Follow the instructions on the can for applying on wood. Maintain sealed wood by washing it and applying a fresh coat of sealer every two to three months.

POLYURTHANE P.U. COATING :

In addition to an admirable appearance, Polyurthane provides genuine protection for the wood. Wood coated with Polyurthane will not dry out and split, will not absorb moisture and rot, is unaffected by dirt and pollution, and will be untouched, thus unstained, by oily or greasy spills.

Teak does not hold Polyurthane as well as other woods due to its oil content, but a long-lasting coating is possible with the right technique. Plan to apply at least six coats of Polyurthane on your teak wood.

We imported world class Polyurthene ( P.U.) from Itlay.
